Parks and reserves

Think about passive prevention! Trust in my experience –
I have never had malaria or travellers’ diarrhoea!

Electricity current - 240 volts and UK sockets! Remember to bring an adapter
if you live in France, or if your country's sockets are of a different standard.
World electric guide or Country Guide for adapter plugs !

My Personal Advice to Travellers Click on the above link and then on
"items to bring" for a long list of things to do or to bring to Kenya.

I am photographer and dream guide to an "authentic" Kenya.
You want to see animals and beautiful landscapes? Read the list below of
several large parks and reserves in Kenya and a few comments about each one.
As the choice of a park depends in convenience of location, season, weather and
characteristics, I did not want to put too much text that would not be read but
rather answer your questions in relation to your choices of time period and place.
I'll be waiting for your messages giving me your desired or planned arrival place
your holiday dates, the number of people and an idea of your budget.
With these details, I will be able to give you a truly wonderful stay or tour.

The Safaris - wow! Very expensive! But I have found a good-value formula
depending on what you want. Read "my advice". In any case
I have got contacts for you with the best price/quality deals!

Why are safaris expensive? click here

Personally as a photographer, I really like Masai Mara, but parks like Nakuru
or Tsavo West or even Amboseli are interesting in their own ways.

This is what I do not like seeing in parks!

I do not like this !! Kenya
This is why I created http://www.voyages-aventures-afrique.net
It takes all kinds to make a world, but I do not
want to go with these people, too many cars!!

Here is a map to locate Kenya's parks and reserves

Parcs and reserves, Kenya

Aberdare
Aberdare national park Kenya
Aberdares, 385 km2, 150 km north of Nairobi, with very dense vegetation
thanks to a mild and humid climate, and it is difficult to get to
and difficult to see animals

Amboseli
Amboseli National Park Kenya
Amboseli, 3260 km2, is one of the most beautiful parks in Kenya
with Kilimanjaro in the background (to see it, you need to get up
early as it is often hidden by clouds, or sometimes in the evening).
You will be able to see many animals (zebra, gnu, giraffe, cheetah, lions and so on).
Located 200 km south of Nairobi on a vast plain dotted with locust trees , and
swamp/marshland. It was here that Ernest Hemingway wrote
"The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and Joseph Kessel wrote "Lion".

Bogoria Lake
Bogoria Lake Park Kenya
Lake Bogoria, 107 km2, well known for its colonies of pink flamingo is located
200 km to the north-west, considered by many to be the most beautiful
lake in Kenya with its metallic green water and geysers

Nairobi Park
Nairobi National Park Kenya
A Nairobi city view taken from the park
A pleasant little park of 114 km2 a few minutes from central Nairobi!
There are many animals present, except elephants.

Nakuru Lake
Nakuru Lake National Park Kenya
This little park of 194 km2, located 160 km north west of Nairobi near Nakuru
4th largest town in Kenya, is a small reserve, but you can see an exceptional
variety of birds such as kingfishers, pelicans, spoonbills, storks, and not
forgetting the pink flamingo colonies. It is in this park that I have
taken my best photos of herons and leopards.

Mount Longonot
Mount Longonot Park Kenya
Hiking enthusiasts will not miss the ascent up this young 2776 m
high volcano, located about ten km south of Naivasha.

Marsabit
Marsabit Park Kenya
The 2000 km2 Marsabit reserve is situated in the far North towards Ethiopia
almost 400 km from Nairobi; many animals, but difficult to see.

Masai Mara
Masai Mara National Park Kenya
The Masai Mara reserve (1510 km2), named after the river Mara that crosses
the park, and the Masai people who live in the region, is definitely the most
famous reserve in Kenya. It is one of the places where you can see the
"Big Five" (lion, elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, leopard). More than 500
species of bird have been indexed in this park, the natural extension
of the Serengeti in Tanzania.

To see the great migration of Gnus !!

Meru
Meru Park Kenya
One of the most beautiful and least visited parks, following the poaching
in the 1980s. Benefiting from a wide variety of different landscapes, from
dense forest to desert! It is located 200 km northeast of Nairobi

Mount Kenya
Mount Kenya Park Kenya
Mount Kenya, 584 km2, 165 km north of Nairobi, is the highest peak in Kenya
at 5199 metres and the 2nd highest in Africa. The scenery is superb and there
are many walks, as well as the climb up the mountain

Samburu and Buffalo Springs 300km2
Samburu and Buffalo Springs reserve Kenya
Samburu and Buffalo Springs, approximately 385 km˛, 325 km north of Nairobi.
To access this reserve from Nairobi, you pass the imaginary line of the Equator
near the town of Nanyuki. Samburu is characterised by a semi-desert region
less popular and dominated by dry bush. It is one of the rare places
where you can find reticulated giraffes, Grevy's zebra and Geren
Kuks (gazelles with giraffes' necks).

Shaba
Shaba reserve Kenya
Just east of Samburu is the beautiful little reserve of Shaba, very under
visited yet very pretty. It is really worth the detour, together with
Samburu and Buffalo Springs

Shimba Hills
Shimba Hills reserve Kenya
A small reserve situated on the coast of the Indian Ocean between Mombasa
and the Tanzanian border, behind the beaches of Tiwi and Diani.
The animals are difficult to see.

Tsavo East
Tsavo East Kenya
The national park of Tsavo, which is divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West
is one of the biggest parks in the world, if not the biggest, at 20,812 km2.
Part of Mombassa's supply of drinking water comes from Tsavo. Tsavo
is a volcanic area; you will sometimes cross lava flows. You will find
large herds of elephants there, and a submerged observatory for
watching crocodiles and hippos (Mzima Spring in Tsavo West).

Tsavo West
Tsavo West Kenya

I prefer Tsavo West for many reasons !!
However note that there are not as many animals as you may think!
They too have their habits and territories. It is the same for mushrooms -
if you go with someone who knows the right places, you will find them!
With regards to the coastal region of southern Kenya near Mombasa
if you want to see wild animals, go there with Fred (a French guy)
he knows as he has lived there for a long time! See Kilimanjaro at 8am
because the cloud cover that you see at the foot of the mountain
climbs very quickly after that, and the mountain will be completely
invisible all day. In the evening, it comes into view again.
Le plus haut sommet d'Afrique, le mont Kilimanjaro
Wonderful scenery and laterite red land at the Taita Hills
Les magnifiques paysages des Taïta Hills
At Taita Hills, the zebra and elephants are red!!
Les Zèbres Rouges !! Les Zèbres Rouges !!
The beaches are not very far - 3 hours by car.
You can camp freely there
(enquire beforehand)
